A huge picture of Catherine Val is about to be finished minutes before the opening of the exhibition " Second Lives: Jeux masqués et autres Je" at Casino Luxembourg featuring 24 artists whose work is about identity, roles, models and avatars.
More info on this event can be found here. Nearly all artists were present ( and many more international guests) at a nice dinner offered by Jo Cox managing director of this famous exhibition hall.

Braco Dimitrijevic, one of the pioneers of conceptual art. He has participated in major group shows such as the Kassel Documenta 5. Documenta 6, Documenta 9, several times at the Venice Biennale. Dimitrijevic gained an international reputation in the seventies with his Casual passer-by series, in which gigantic photo portraits of anonymous people were displayed on prominent facades and billboards in European and American cities. The artist also mimicked other ways of glorifying important persons by building monuments to passers-by and installing memorial plaques in honour of anonymous citizens.
The Museum of Art and History in Luxembourg ( MNHA ) has been partner of the European Month of Photography for 6 years now. The Museum hosts two more exhibitions on photography: Memories of ancient Egypt ( Travel photography of the 19th century: Dan Kyram collection, Jerusalem ) and an Edward Steichen exhibition ( collection of the Museum )

Vienna meeting: Is Emop to continue ?

Most important meeting in Vienna on February 2nd and 3d 2011 to assess the situation. Politics interfere in Moscow ( a new mayor ) and Rome ( severe budget cuts in cultural affairs ) and this will probably push out these two cities. During the meeting the remaining five ( Berlin, Bratislava, Paris, Vienna and Luxembourg ) expressed their intention to continue working together. The subject for the next exhibition was already chosen : how does reality and fiction coexist in photography ?
New membership was also discussed. Budapest, Ljubljana and London had their representatives introduced to the board and gave interesting insights into their photo festivals. A charter will be worked out.

Finally the meeting was much more satisfying than expected. Not only were we able to find a workable compromise for our common budget. We were also able to have a consensus on some interesting artists and their web projects

We look at about 50 proposals for our Mutations 3 exhibitions.Somewhat frustrating meeting with no final conclusions. Have been away (Houston -FotoFest) last week. So I am really surprised about a sudden boom of exchange.
To the blog idea - I do not want to sound pesimistic but it will only work if there is somebody as Pierre and Thomas willing to make it live. I would not expect everybody of us to contribute because it has never happened before - and coming back from the Festival of Light meeting (another network) I can only that say we are not the only proof that an active involvement of a majority is not realistic. I am personally out of breath fullfilling only our long-term tasks.
I support the idea of having an exciting, flashy ... whatever presentation on internet, but first I do not have an idea how it should look like and second I cannot promise I will contribute regularly - there is already a website I have to update once a month - this is just what I can manage to do.
What I am trying to say that our network, just as any other such network, is destined to either have somebody eager to do it or we have to accept that we are only able to run a website that can be changed and updated only a few times a year.

I am sorry particularly for Pierre and Thomas who seem really excited about these kind of gadgets (you can see their eyes sparkling - just like some years ago in front of Xmas tree). This is just to say that I am not able to keep up with you in this. Now we have two options - an almost dead website and a blog a bit more alive. Can we look at it realistic next meeting and say honestly what we are all able to support?

Work session at MUDAM Luxembourg

Work session in Luxembourg at the Musée d art moderne Grand-Duc Jean. This was the first informal meeting with staff members. Some videos were shown and we discussed basic elements of the show like technical requirements as some artists need special installations.We are very happy to have experienced staff to help us set up Mutations 2 in the most prestigious exhbition place in Luxembourg.

Berlin is hosting the next meeting

Berlin will host the next meeting of the Emop team where final decisions will be made concerning the concept of the main exhibition ( Mutations 2 ), the catalogue, DVD and Web site. Unfortunately, Rome can not attend because of a very tight schedule. We will try to set up web conferencing to allow Anna or Emiliano to take part in the discussions. Steps were taken to speed up decision making; we all are aware that international collaboration need to adapt strategies to make things move on.

EMOP 2008/09 meeting in Bratislava

Members of the emop team met this time in Bratislava at the House of photography. All cities were present except Rome. Anna Gianesini could not come for personnal reasons. From Paris there was this time a new curator - Jean-Luc Soret- who is going to be in charge of the Paris exhibition at the Maison européenne de la photographie. From Moscow there was Ekaterina Kondradina in replacement of Olga Sviblova. The first day was quite succesfull in achieving some important agreements in money matters. We also heard that our main sponsor is going to maintain the price (Alcatel price for photography ) and it is going to be decided in Paris but announced in Berlin.

Members of the Emop Team during a break the second day of the meeting in Paris on october 6th. This time we settled for a more restricted number of artists to be in the 2008 and 2009 shows. But there were no final decisions taken yet and the look ( and feel ) of the next Mutations exhibition is still pending. Major topics were not addressed as this was a curators meeting focusing on the concept of the Mutations2 exhibition. Hopefully the Bratislava meeting next January will come up with more precise indications about the Internet site, the exhibition catalogue and DVD.

Mutations I - opening in Vienna on September 6, 2007

It was a rainy and cold evening outside, but the atmosphere inside was warm and friendly. Starting with a preview and introduction to the exhibition by photo theorist Ruth Horak and ending hours later with wine and Sachertorte, the opening at the MUSA was a wonderful final for the first common exhibition of the "European Month of Photography".

Next Emop Meeting to be held in Paris

Berthold Ecker ( Vienna ) was pleased to hear that the next Emop Meeting is going to be held in Paris on October 5th and 6th. This meeting should come up with a final selection of artists to be in the show in 2008 and 2009. Luxembourg is still not sure to have its Months of photography scheduled in fall / winter 2008 and prefers spring ( march ) 2009 in order to comply with a request of the Casino Luxembourg, Forum d'art contemporain which will host a major exhibition curated by Paul Difelice and Pierre Stiwer.

Rome meeting successfull

The summer meeting of the Emop Team in Rome proved more succesfull than expected. Although there were fears about the concept of the next exhibition ( Mutations 2 ), a two-day conference allowed for an in depth discussion about what was meant by an exhibition being about photographers but including video.

Next meeting of the Emop team is scheduled in Rome on June 4th and 5th. This is mainly a curators meeting. Topics to be discussed are restricted to the concept of the next exhibition ( Mutations 2 ). As it was said, mainly photographers who do also video work are going to be part of this exhibition. In order to avoid a video exhibition, the artistic concept should be refined so as to not drift away from photography as it is normally understood.

Emop meeting closes successfully

Second day of the Emop meeting in Luxembourg achieved greater coherence in defining the goals of the next common exhibition in 2008. It was decided to illustrate the mutations taking place in photography by including mainly artists whose work is combining video or other media techniques. The Mutations 2 exhibition will include participants from the seven member countries ( 3 artists selected per country ): Besides every city's curator and / or a guest curator will chose 5 artists of the remaining European countries ( 7x5 ). Out of this pool of 56 artists, a jury will select up to 14 artists to be part of the Mutations II exhibition to take place in Berlin, Bratislava, Luxembourg, Paris and Vienna in 2008, Moscow and Rome in 2009.

Emop 2008 opening meeting in Luxembourg

On Tuesday 23d the Centre de Rencontre Abbaye de Neumünster in Luxembourg hosted the first conference of the the Emop team for 2007 . All members assisted with the exception of Thomas Friedrich ( Berlin ) and Berthold Ecker ( Vienna ). Olga Sviblova ( Moscow ) could not attend either. The conference started with discussions about the new concept of the 2008 exhibition. It was decided to include video-art of photographers and to build the exhibition around a mixed media concept. It is still not settled whether the Mutations 2 exhibition will be video only or include photographers working in a "traditional" way.

The image of the 2006 "Month of Photography" in Vienna was a real eyecatcher. Based on a work by young Austrian photographer Anja Manfredi more than 3000 posters were distributed during November, and 200 "City-lights" (photo) covered prestigious spaces all over the town.

Picture of the Raddison Hotel lobby; most uf us stayed at this nice hotel quite near the Town Hall where the meetings where; yoou just had to cross the street. Opening in Berlin was on November 2nd 2006 at the Gropius Bau. Big attendance.

Ouverture du Mois européen de la photo Luxembourg

L'ouverture du Mois européen de la photographie a eu lieu au Luxembourg le 14 octobre 2006. Quatorze musées, insititutions et galeries privées avaient consacré leurs espaces à la photographie contemporaine.
L'exposition principale eut lieu au Casino Luxembourg, Forum d'art contemporain et à la Chapelle du Rham. Ont été exposés au Casino Philippe Ramette ( France ) et le groupe russe ( AES+F ). On a montré à la Chapelle du Rham l'allemande Beate Gütschow, le slovaque Marek Kvetan, la viennoise Nina Dick et l'italienne Eva Frapiccini. Les deux artistes luxembourgeois ont été les soeurs Elisabeth et Carine Krecké.
Un catalogue important est édité par Contrasto ( Rome ) avec l'appui d'Alcatel, sponsor de l'événement.
35 artistes/photographes avaient été préselectionnés. Les expositions dans 7 capitales européennes ( Beerlin, Bratislava, Luxembourg, Moscou, Rome, Paris et Vienne ont lieu en 2006, respectivement en 2007.

Opening in Berlin took place at the Gropius Bau with a great attendance on Thursday November 2d. Pictures show exhibition space 1 with the works of the Russian artists group AESF; Frenchman Philippe Ramette being interviewed by German TV. All the artists had been invited: another picture shows Luxembourg artists and twin sisters Carine and Elisabeth Krecké, Viennese artist Nina Dick as well as Eva Frapiccini, Italy, with curator Paul Difelice from Luxembourg. It was the seconf time that Berlin hosted the Europäischer Monat des Fotografie after 2004.
