The „European Month of Photography“ network is proud to announce a new photography award : The “EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARENDT AWARD”. This award will be granted every second year to one visual artist who is part of the common exhibitions the network is curating throughout Europe..
The “EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARENDT AWARD” is sponsored by Arendt & Medernach, the leading independent business law firm in Luxembourg with offices in Brussels, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Moscow and New York. For Arendt & Medernach, contemporary art is a passion. Since a number of years, the firm is engaged in the art of photography by exhibiting artists from all over the world in its building situated in Kirchberg, Luxembourg. Works of well known artists such as David LaChapelle,Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Candida Höfer and Günther Förg were exhibited along with works of young talents. Progressively, Arendt & Medernach built up its own art collection, representative of the main currents in contemporary photography. With time, art became a real communication project, directed at the inside as well as the outside of the firm. By creating an evolving work environment, Arendt & Medernach has the ambition to show that the work of a lawyer is like art something that requires a permanent questioning and the referral to take anything for granted, but change and evolution.. True to its passion, Arendt & Medernach wishes to encourage open-mindedness, diversity and the sharing of emotions. It is thus a great pleasure for Arendt & Medernach to be affiliated with the European Month of Photography.
The award will be presented for the first time in Luxembourg in 2013 and will be granted to one of the 26 artists of the exhibition project “distURBANces”. “distURBANces” has been curated by the seven partner cities of the „European Month of Photography“– Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Paris and Vienna – as a challenge to the traditional notion of what is “real“ in a world characterized by continuous transformation. It was exhibited in Berlin, Bratislava, Paris and Luxembourg in 2012/13 and will be presented in Ljubljana, Luxembourg and Budapest in 2013/14. All 26 artists chosen for the catalogue will be presented to the Jury consisting of four “distURBANces” curators, Gunda Achleitner (Vienna), Paul di Felice (Luxembourg), Katia Reich (Berlin) and Jean-Luc Soret (Paris), and Oliva María Rubio, exhibition director of Spanish “La Fabrica“:
The winner will receive the “EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY ARENDT AWARD” on an amount of 5,000 EUR, his/her works will be exhibited in the exhibition space of Arendt & Medernach’s headquarters in Luxembourg from 25 April 2013 onwards.

Meeting in Vienna

For the third time in a little more than a year Vienna hosted on January 8th and 9th one of the formal meetings of EMoP. It was held in the exhibition rooms of the MUSA which hosted the "distURBANces" exhibition and just closed. All seven members were present and discussed the new projects for the year to come. With new memberships pending, discussions were mainly about how to maintain a high level of activity in hard times. An exhibition project by Bratislava on propaganda imagery under communism and fascism as well as an ongoing project by the Vienna MUSA on the Sarajevo assassination which led to the first World War in 1914 were the basis of discussion around a contemporary photography exhibition inspired by these topics. Members decided to meet again in Paris by end of February as well as in Luxembourg on April 24th for the venue of the "distURBANces" exhibitions at the Musée national d'histoire et d'art in Luxembourg. This meeting also decided on the need to give legal existence to the group which meets regularly since 2004.

A huge picture of Catherine Val is about to be finished minutes before the opening of the exhibition " Second Lives: Jeux masqués et autres Je" at Casino Luxembourg featuring 24 artists whose work is about identity, roles, models and avatars.
More info on this event can be found here. Nearly all artists were present ( and many more international guests) at a nice dinner offered by Jo Cox managing director of this famous exhibition hall.

Conference at Clairefontaine gallery

Gallery owner Marita Ruiter had invited a pannel of photographers and representatives of some major institutions to discuss the situation of photography in Luxembourg at the occasion of an exhibition by photographer Michel Medinger.

Vernissage Arsenal Metz

 
Christian Gattinoni, professeur en l'Ecole photographique d'Arles, présente son expositition Modèles-Danse à l'Arsenal de Metz. Pour la première fois, le Mois européen de la photo au Luxembourg s'étend à une ville voisine. M Jean-François Ramon, directeur de l'Arsenal, connaît très bien le Luxembourg. Il y a été directeur du Centre culturel français il y a quelques années.
